How to Declutter By Selling/Donating Your Used But AWESOME Books

I had a friend who collected books and they were her prized possessions until she had to moved!  The once awesome collection that she was obsessed with, turned into a very unpleasant monster.  I never encourage throwing away books (no, no, no dear reader!), but I also don’t encourage being a hoarder; therefore, today you will learn where to donate your unwanted used books!

Your local library

Like bookstores, the library is a gem that is rarely used.  Most libraries have connections with local schools or different programs that request gently used books for the less fortunate.  This is a great option if you are looking for a place that won’t make a profit from your books but will pay it forward in return.

Goodwill

We are all familiar will giving Goodwill our used clothes, furniture, toys, etc.  But while cleaning out your closet, don’t forget to throw a book in your pile for someone else to enjoy!  Goodwill is also one of my favorite places to donate my books because they have annual booklover’ sales in which all books are buy one get one free!  The sale was on August 9 for the Nashville community so check your local store for the next date!

Books for Africa

I studied abroad at the University of Ghana while in college so I have a special place in my heart for Africa.  I even volunteered and set the foundation for a local village library to be built! Books for Africa believes that:

“education is the great equalizer in the world, and books are at the foundation of a strong educational system. For many children in Africa, the gift of books truly is a gift of hope.”

Not only do they accept fiction and non-fiction books but they also accept textbooks and school supplies.  To donate simply mail your items to:

Better World Books

Better World Books collects and sells books online to donate books and fund literacy initiatives worldwide.  Thus far they have over 8 MILLION new and used books that they sell or donating to others.  The best thing about this site is that unlike the others, you do have the option to sell your books as well!  Their three major literacy partners are Books for Africa, the National Center for families learning, and Room to Read.

Now it’s your turn, where are some places you go to donate your awesome books?!

  1. The irony of me stumbling on your post as I sit here surrounded by books I’m not even reading. Thank you sharing this information, I will definitely be using the sources you mentioned!

  2. This is an amazing article! Thank you for inspiring us how to get rid of books in a more lovely way instead of just throwing them to the bin. I also got rid of my books – had too many and needed more space. I also sold them and gave them away for a good cause.

  3. I love the idea of recycling books. When my degree was over I took all the books on my reading list and donated them to Oxfam. I hope another student benefitted from them 🙂

  4. I’m all for recycling books! Last year I took all of the books from my history degree reading list and donated them to the Oxfam bookshop (after my degree was over, of course!). I hope someone out there managed to benefit from them 🙂
